iPhone Sales Drop 5% as Smartphones Decline for the First Time Since 2014

The fourth quarter of 2017 brought the first decline in smartphone sales since 2004, as shipments of both leaders Samsung and Apple dropped late last year.

Data provided by Gartner indicates that total sales in Q4 dropped 5.6 percent as compared to the same period the year before to 408 million units, and despite the declining performance of Apple and Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi performed strong.

Samsung sold a little over 74 million units during Q4 2017, down from 76.7 million units in Q4 2016, a decline of 3.6 percent. But the overall decline of the entire market secure Samsung a share of 18.2%, up from 17.8% in 2016.

Apple was the runner-up with 73.1 million sold units, a massive decline from no less than 77 million units in the same quarter the year before. Apple’s market share is now 17.9%.
